Bringing an old jacket back to life

A client recently came to me with an old jacket that was falling apart. I could tell just by looking at the images she sent me that this jacket was very well loved. It had been worn within an inch of its life. The vinyl it was made out of was peeling all over and the fabric underneath was wearing so thin I'm honestly amazed there were no holes in it already. This client wanted her beloved jacket remade using genuine leather. She had spent months getting in contact with several businesses, all of which eventually let her down.

After hearing her story and seeing how much she wanted her new jacket, I was thrilled to be able to help her. The old jacket was sent to me so that I could take a pattern to make sure it was going to be the exact same size and look. With the pattern done I was then onto the construction. Every single panel on the old jacket was quilted, which meant the new jacket had to be no different. Often when a garment is quilted, the fabric has been purchased with this effect already complete, however as this was to be remade in leather, all panels had to be quilted by hand. Every panel had wadding sewn to the back of the piece to create the texture, then the pieces were marked with all of the lines to be sewn to create the diamond look. While this took a very long time, it was so worth it to see the final result. The quilted pieces were then constructed just as the previous jacket was, and I was so excited to have my client receive her brand new and improved jacket.
